"I’m a photographer, filmmaker, and creative director from England, currently living in Canada. My creative journey began as a teenager, watching black and white films like The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance. The scene where John Wayne is standing by a wall in shadows, and lights a cigarette that immediately illuminates his face—that was the moment I was captivated by black and white photography and cinematography, and the emotional power that good lighting holds, to tell a story.

I went to college to study photography and graphic communication, worked for a few years designing and shooting for windsurfing and mountain bike brands, before landing the contract to promote the opening of the Channel Tunnel—handling all the marketing and communications materials. The highlight was photographing the souvenir book of the week-long events and festivities.  Next, I moved to Canada and started a creative agency which quickly grew to 30 people, and became the largest independent integrated media company in the country. I had the pleasure of working for some of the country’s biggest brands and corporations.

After selling my company, I pursued travel and lifestyle photography, working with tourism organizations, travel brands, and publications. I became more interested in video production, and began to make promotional videos and YouTube videos for brands. I have my own YouTube channel, which allows me to experiment and hone my videography skills.

Today, my preference is photographing travel projects, environmental portraits, and food—and making documentary-style video content and films. I recently shot a feature length travel documentary in Spain which has already screened in movie theatres in Australia, Spain, and Canada. It’s coming to the USA in 2026.

I’m a regularly published writer of educational and opinion articles about photography and filmmaking, and am starting to introduce customized private tuition and workshops this coming year.

Everything I do is focused around storytelling. Lighting plays the most important role in creating the right mood, to help tell stories in a compelling manner.

From the second I opened the first kit and held a Harlowe light, I fell in love with the design, the build quality, and the functionality. There’s really no other lighting kits quite like a Harlowe kit.

The details impress me—from the useful magnetic modifiers, to the elegant design of the v-mount clamps. Everything has been so well thought out.

It makes photography so much more enjoyable when you get to use a top-quality products that not only perform well, but look and feel good as well." --Simon Burn

MY LIGHT

"I have three Harlowe kits. The first kit is for location photography. I shoot portraits for clients like museums, art galleries, and resorts, so a small portable lighting kit is invaluable. It consists of a Max 80W and Max 40W, plus light stands and a 36-inch quick release softbox for the Max 80W, along with a barn door and diffuser dome for the Max 40W. The second kit is for travel and urban photography when I’m on the move. I like to pop a Mini II 20 and a Micro 8 Spectra in my bag. Both lights are very small. The third kit is for my studio. I use a Pro 300W LED Bi-Color Studio Light Kit, together with the Max 80W and Max 40W. I’ll use a Light Stand 210 and 36-inch softboxes." -- Simon Burn
